Taking advantage of the reduced requirements for In-law units, my clients decided the time was right to add a guest house to their Berkeley Bungalow.

The 500 SF free standingAccessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in North Berkeley designed to be flexible enough to accommodate an office/ studio, teenager suite or a place to age in place.

With a growing family the homeowners wanted to expand their 1300 SF bungalow and take advantage of the reduced requirements forADU’s. Working within the strict ADU requirements, the building form is simple with a sloping roof on three sides and gable in front. Wood and aluminum panel rain screen distinguish the entry, highlight the living volume and break up the wall surfaces on the outside.

To maximize space, the bathroom is divided into separate bath and toilet rooms grouped to the side of a large bedroom and separate big-room. The exposed roof structure gives the compact plan a spaciousness and dramatic quality.

Radiant heating in the floor makes the space warm and cozy while being environmentally friendly. Inviting in the lush Berkeley backyard, a 10’ bi-folding patio door opens out to a deck area paved in slate. Topping the little structure off is a zinc roof ensuring attractive long-lasting protection.
